Veteran Affairs (VA) Health Benefits

Many U.S military veterans with Parkinson’s disease have access to medical care and financial assistance through the U.S department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA Health Administration is America’s largest integrated health care system, serving 9 million enrolled Veterans annually.

Patient Assistance Programs

Patient assistance programs are available through drug manufacturers for name-brand medications only. These programs are designed to offer copay assistance or provide the medication(s) at a discounted rate. If eligible, some programs will provide the medication at no cost for the lifetime of the prescription. You may be required to provide your personal information, insurance coverage, income level, and prescriber information to apply for these programs.

Parkinson’s Foundations

There are many non-profit Parkinson’s foundations available that provide a variety of resources. These are mostly designed to help patients afford their medications and any necessary medical equipment.  These foundations can supply funding to patients who are uninsured, on Medicare and/or commercial insurance plans.  Some foundations still have funding available, although those allotments may expire towards the end of the year. Please connect with different foundations and check back frequently for funding and application status. 

This non-profit patient assistance program offers help with copays, ancillary services, and nursing/infusion services for people with Parkinson’s and other diseases. There are multiple options for both privately insured, uninsured, medicare, tricare, medicaid, etc.

The Assistance Fund covers a variety of diagnoses, including Parkinson’s disease.  TAF serves underinsured individuals with financial assistance to cover all or part of the out-of-pocket costs of prescription medications. As with all of these programs, eligibility is based on household size and income. Special circumstances will be considered when appropriate. As of 11/1/2022, The Assistance Fund is currently operating on a waitlist for Parkinson’s assistance, click the link below to be added to the waitlist.

The Melvin Weinstein Parkinson’s Foundation is a non-profit organization that offers assistance for patients with Parkinson’s disease.  This foundation assists patients and their families by purchasing equipment and supplies necessary to maintain a safe environment for patients. This foundation helps people who have insurance to afford their copays in order to ensure they get the prescriptions, treatments, and care they need.

The PAN Foundation assists patients with costs of medication, co-pays, insurance premiums, and travel expenses. Based on eligibility and funding, patients may apply for assistance up to $3,300 per year. The PAN foundation covers a variety of FDA approved medications Parkinson’s disease. The Parkinson’s Wellness Fund provides Parkinson’s patients access to services and support needed to live an improved quality of life. There are a variety of opportunities available through this program.   Being a part of the PWF is 100% free to patients and their families, and you will receive one-on-one attention and care.

Prescription (Rx) Savings Cards

Prescription savings cards are usually a free tool used to help patients save hundreds to thousands on their routine medication prescriptions by offering savings on both brand name and generic medications. Savings and prices vary based on location and pharmacy, and can be used to compare savings whether the patient is on a commercial insurance plan or on Medicare, or to supplement when adequate prescription coverage is not available. 

To access the savings card you will need an active Prime membership. You can receive a discount of up to 80% on generic and 40% on brand name prescription medications. The Prime prescription savings card can be used at more than 60,000 participating pharmacies across the country, including Amazon Pharmacy.

You can receive discounts of up to 80% on most prescription drugs at over 70,000 U.S. pharmacies. Use the tool on their website or app to compare drug prices at different pharmacies. Good Rx also has a mobile app so that you can compare prescription drug prices and find coupons which can be used instantly.

Online Pharmacies

Online or internet pharmacies provide several benefits to obtaining your Parkinson’s medications, such as convenience, cost, and time savings. They not only offer large savings compared to traditional pharmacies but provide the convenience of having your medication delivered to your doorstep, sometimes same-day delivery is available, giving a huge advantage to the traditional in-person or drop-off prescription and fulfillment. Consumer reports show that 61% of adults saved up to $20 on average through online pharmacies, and 94% report it’s faster to obtain their medications than compared to traditional pharmacies.

The price of medications in Canada  is generally less expensive than in the US and it is legal to bring them over to the US or mail them to you. There are many pharmacies that do this but you must make sure that they are licensed. Check out a few options below:

Cost Plus drugs is an online pharmacy that offers medications at the lowest price possible by cutting out the middleman. You can search your medication(s) either alphabetically or by medical condition. Once you’ve found your medication, sign up for an account. Then reach out to your physician with CPD provided instructions. Once Cost Plus has received your prescription from your doctor, they will fill your order and ship your medication to your doorstep within a few days.

Walgreen’s prescription savings club provides patients access to thousands of discounted medications (no insurance required).  They offer a price guarantee for generic medications to receive a 90-day supply for the price of two 30-day supplies. There is a membership fee of $20, but will more than cover itself in prescription savings.

Walmart Rx provides a 30-day supply of a number of medications for just $4. There are no required memberships, fees, and insurance is not required to participate. The types of medications on this list are often generic, and the program includes nearly 100 different generic medications from between $4 – $40.

Some restrictions may include:

  • Pricing may depend on where you live
  • North Dakota is not included
  • Your prescription may not always cost $4
  • Brand-name drugs are not included
  • Refills are provided via mail, but your first prescription must be picked up in store
  • It’s not always cheaper than insurance, so make sure to compare pricing
