We understand that Parkinson’s Disease treatments are a financial burden.

Assistance for PD care, including medications, services, and equipment can be accessed through various non-profit organizations. For all of these programs, eligibility is based on household size (number of dependents) and household income. Special circumstances are considered when appropriate because financial hardship can occur at all income levels.

The Melvin Weinstein Parkinson’s Foundation (MWPF), and The Parkinson’s Wellness Fund are both charities that grant support to families that are unable to cover costs associated with care. The MWPF can be found at http://www.mwpf.org. An application for assistance following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease can be downloaded from their site and specific equipment requests can be made depending on the families’ particular needs.

The Parkinson’s Wellness Fund assists patients and their families in paying for various services including; Audiology, Assisted Living, Chiropractor, Dance Classes, Educational Support, Fitness Trainer, Gym Membership, Home Modifications, Home Care, In Home Respite Care, Nutrition Programs, Occupational, Speech and Physical Therapists, Podiatrist, Psychologist, Service Dogs, Thai Chi, Transportation Assistance and Yoga. They can also provide financial assistance for Medical and Nurse Practitioner visits. Their website can be found at http://parkinsonswellnessfund.org.

The Assistance Fund is taking applications for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. TAF serves underinsured individuals with financial assistance to cover all or part of the out-of-pocket costs of prescription medications. As with all of these programs, eligibility is based on household size and income. Special circumstances will be considered when appropriate. Their website can be accessed at tafcares.org and their phone number is (855) 421-4608.

Additional resources exist to help with prescription costs for families that are either uninsured or insured with high copays. These organizations are not limited to families affected by Parkinson’s Disease, but can be utilized by anyone facing the hardship of prescription fees and copays. In addition to these resources, most pharmaceutical companies have assistance programs for each of their medications.

Rx Outreach is a non-profit pharmacy program that provides families with prescribed medications at a reduced cost. In order to be eligible for this program, income must meet certain guidelines based on the size of the family. (i.e. Not more than 49,380 a year for a family of 2). Most of the common PD medications are available through this program including; Amantadine, Benztropine, Bromocryptine, Sinemet (Carbidopa/Levodopa), SInemet CR, Stalevo (Carbidopa/Levodopa/Entacapone), Mirapex (Pramipexole), Azilect (Rasagiline) and Requip (Ropinerole).
